Construction of the Basilica Cistern

The cistern was built in the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

It was designed to store water for the Great Palace of Constantinople and nearby buildings.

The Byzantine Period

The cistern was part of an extensive water system that supplied water to Constantinople.

Its massive columns and underground structure allowed it to store thousands of tons of water.

The Cistern in Modern Times

After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, the cistern continued to exist but was gradually forgotten.

It was rediscovered in the 16th century and later restored and opened to visitors.

Today, the Basilica Cistern is one of the most visited historical attractions in Istanbul.
