How to Get to the Basilica Cistern

Getting There by Public Transport

The easiest way to reach the Basilica Cistern is by using the T1 tram line. The closest stop is Sultanahmet.

From the Sultanahmet tram station, the cistern is only a short walk away and is located near the Hagia Sophia.

Walking to the Basilica Cistern

If you are visiting the historical peninsula, the Basilica Cistern is within walking distance from major attractions such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace.

Walking through Sultanahmet Square is one of the most pleasant ways to reach the cistern.

Getting There by Taxi

Taxis are widely available in Istanbul. Simply ask the driver to take you to Sultanahmet or Basilica Cistern.

Because the cistern is located in the heart of the historic district, it is very easy to reach from most tourist areas.
